Regarding The Meteorite:
Research indicates that this meteorite is the most ancient identified to date, striking the Earth in the Quaternary Period around a million years ago. It is believed to originate from the iron core or mantle of a planetoid, breaking into numerous pieces upon its descent to Earth. Since its arrival, the meteorite has witnessed four ice ages, discovered within a glacial moraine in the northern tundra. It features a heavily weathered exterior adorned with pebbles that have become fused over time.
The Muonionalusta meteorite, known for its fine octahedrite structure, type IVA (Of), impacted northern Scandinavia, near the Sweden-Finland border, around one million years BCE.
Discovered in 1906 close to Kitkiöjärvi village, to date, approximately forty fragments have been found, some of significant size. These pieces have been located within a 25-by-15-kilometer area in Norrbotten County's Pajala district, lying about 140 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.
First documented in 1910 by Professor A. G. Högbom, who named it after the nearby Muonionalusta area along the Muonio River, it was further analyzed in 1948 by Professor Nils Göran David Malmqvist. Notably, the Muonionalusta meteorite is considered the oldest known meteorite, dating back 4.5653 ± 0.0001 billion years, and is the first to exhibit stishovite in an iron meteorite.
The name "Muonionalusta" is derived from the Finnish, referencing the Muonio River and "alusta" which means "base, foundation, or starting point," aptly suggesting its origins or discovery site at the river's outset.
